SO WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE IN FLORIDA IS REALLY PROVIDING EDUCATION AND CONSUMER PROTECTION FOR PEOPLE TO GO SOLAR.

AND. AND SOME EXAMPLES OF LIKE FIGHTING FOR ENERGY RIGHTS.

WE HELP DEFEND NET METERING IN FLORIDA.

A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO.

HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENT INCENTIVES AND LAWS THAT WE HAVE IN FLORIDA.

SO A LOT OF THINGS THAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW, LIKE WE HAVE A SOLAR RIGHTS LAW ACTUALLY HELPED PASS WRITTEN BY FCC, WHICH I'M ASSUMING EVERYBODY IS FAMILIAR WITH BECAUSE OF WHERE WE ARE. AND AND THEN WE HAVE THINGS LIKE A PROPERTY TAX ABATEMENT AND THAT'S, YOU KNOW.

REALLY HELPFUL FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT SOLAR INCREASES THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME, BUT WON'T MAKE OUR PROPERTY TAXES GO UP, BECAUSE IN FLORIDA WE ACTUALLY HAVE PRETTY HIGH PROPERTY TAXES COMPARATIVELY.

SO LIKE I SAID, WE'RE NATIONAL.

WE GOT STARTED BECAUSE SOMEBODY WANTED TO GO SOLAR IN 2007IN DC.

AND THEN OTHER PEOPLE WANTED TO KEEP DOING THAT IN DIFFERENT WARDS OR LITTLE COMMUNITIES IN DC AND DC.

BEING A VERY HEAVY COMMUTER STATE, IT QUICKLY SPREAD TO MARYLAND, THEN VIRGINIA, AND THEN THIS PICTURE DOWN HERE.

BUT WE'VE HAD CO OPS AS KIND OF THE PROJECT THAT WE USE TO HELP PEOPLE GO SOLAR ALL THE WAY FROM PENSACOLA DOWN TO THE KEYS, AND WE ARE ON OUR FOURTH CO OP IN BREVARD COUNTY. SO THAT'S WHAT I CAME TO REALLY TALK ABOUT TONIGHT IS THE BREVARD COUNTY SOLAR CO OP AND HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED IN THAT.

WE ARE CURRENTLY TRYING TO GROW THAT CO OP.

IT IS SMALLER THAN IT USUALLY IS BECAUSE WE NORMALLY HAVE A LOT OF MUNICIPAL SUPPORT AND SPREADING THE WORD, BUT EVERYBODY WAS BUSY WITH OTHER ACRONYMS LIKE CPR AND ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU ALL HAVE TO DO WITH ALL THE EXCITING IMPLEMENTATION PROJECTS THAT ARE COMING DOWN FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND OUR STATE.

AND THEN A COUPLE PESKY HURRICANES HAPPENED AS WELL.

SO OUR ATTENTION HAS BEEN A LITTLE DIVIDED, BUT OUR CO OP HAS, WHENEVER THEY REACH 30 MEMBERS, WE ISSUE A REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS, AGAIN TRYING TO LOWER THE COST FOR EVERYBODY THROUGH THAT BULK PURCHASING POWER.

SO WE DID DO THAT.

WE GOT 11 BIDS FOR THE SPACE COAST SOLAR CO OP AGAIN, THAT FOURTH ITERATION, ONE WE'VE ALREADY DISQUALIFIED BECAUSE WE PROVIDE CONSUMER PROTECTION. SO WE DO LIKE BACKGROUND CHECKS ON THE INSTALLERS.

AND IF WE THINK THAT THEY'RE NOT SOMEBODY WE WOULD RECOMMEND FOR SOMEONE TO USE, THEN WE DON'T ALLOW ANYBODY TO SEE THAT BID AND TELL THEM THAT THIS IS NOT SOMEBODY WE WOULD RECOMMEND GOING WITH FOR WHATEVER REASON.

MAYBE THEIR INSURANCE WASN'T UP TO DATE OR THEIR LICENSE HAD COMPLAINTS AGAINST IT AND WAS INACTIVE.

SO WHATEVER REASON THAT MAY BE, AND THAT WAS THE REASON IN THIS CASE, THEY HAD FORMER LICENSE COMPLAINTS THAT WE THOUGHT WERE A BIG CONSUMER PROTECTION FLAG.

SO TEN BIDS.

AND THEN NEXT WEEK WE ARE GOING TO SHARE THAT WITH THE CO OP MEMBERS WHO HAVE RAISED THEIR HAND AND SAID, HEY, I WANT TO BE ON THE SELECTION COMMITTEE.

AND THAT RANGES IT CAN BE A STAY AT HOME MOM, A TEACHER IN BREVARD COUNTY, A LOT OF ENGINEERS.

I'VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY DESIGNED SOLAR PV AND PATENTED IT AND WORKED WITH THE GOVERNMENT AND WENT TO HIS HOUSE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, RIGHT BEFORE THE PANDEMIC.

AND HE TOLD ME HIS PANELS WERE REALLY UGLY AND HE WANTED TO REPLACE THEM, BUT THEY WERE STILL OPERATING ABOUT 60%.

AND I WAS LIKE, OH, THOSE ARE PAID OFF.

YOU STILL GET 60% OUT OF THEM.

WHY NOT JUST KEEP RIDING THAT TRAIN? AND THEN HE SAID THAT THEY WERE FROM 1976.

AND I WAS LIKE, I HAVE TO SEE THIS.

CAN I INVITE MYSELF TO YOUR HOUSE, PLEASE? AND THEY WERE VERY UGLY.

I ALSO THOUGHT HE WAS PROBABLY NOT BEING COMPLETELY HONEST ABOUT LIKE WHAT THEY LOOKED LIKE OR JUST, YOU KNOW, MISSPEAKING.

SO SPACE COAST HAS BEEN REALLY INTERESTING AND THAT WE GET TO INTERACT WITH A LOT OF FOLKS FROM, YOU KNOW, HARRIS AND KENNEDY SPACE CENTER AND SUCH, AND A LOT OF EARLY ADOPTERS TOO.

SO WE GET TO SEE SOME COOL EVS.

SO YEAH, THE SPACE COAST SOLAR CO OP NEXT WEEK WILL SELECT THE INSTALLER.

IT IS A DEMOCRATIC PROCESS WHERE THE CO-OP MEMBERS THEMSELVES SELECT IT.

WE PROVIDE SUPPORT THROUGHOUT AND DO ALL THE VETTING.

WE LAY EVERYTHING OUT IN A APPLES TO APPLES COMPARISON, AND THEN THEY VOTE ON WHO THEY THINK IS THE BEST BASED ON WARRANTY EQUIPMENT BEING OFFERED PRICE. EXPERIENCE IS A BIG ONE TOO.

AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE ALWAYS, YOU KNOW, EDUCATE AND PREACH THE SUNSHINE ON.

SO WHENEVER WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE GO SOLAR, IT'S NOT SOLAR THERMAL.

SO IT'S NOT THE MESHY PANELS THAT YOU SEE TO HEAT PEOPLE'S POOL.

IT'S SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC THAT JUST CONVERTS ELECTRICITY FROM PHOTONS FROM THE SUN JUST STRAIGHT TO DIRECT CURRENT ELECTRICITY.

I LIKE TO TELL PEOPLE PANELS ARE DUMB, PANELS HAVE NO MOVING PARTS, AND IT REALLY IS JUST SILICON THAT GETS EXCITED WHEN EXPOSED TO PHOTONS.

SO THERE'S REALLY NOT A LOT THAT CAN GO WRONG HERE.

A LOT OF THE, YOU KNOW, POLITICAL OR OTHER THINGS THAT WE PUT INTO THE MIX, THEIR PANELS ARE JUST COMPLETELY AGNOSTIC TO THAT.

THEY GET EXCITED WHEN THEY SEE SUNSHINE AND THEY JUST WORK.

THEY'RE ALSO EXTREMELY STURDY, NOT JUST BECAUSE OF PLACES LIKE FLORIDA, BUT ALSO BECAUSE OF COLDER CLIMATES WHERE THEY'RE VERY POPULAR.

THERE'S A HIGHER PENETRATION OF PANELS IN ALL OF NEW ENGLAND THAN FLORIDA AND OTHER SUNSHINE YEAR STATES.

SO THEY HAD TO FIGURE OUT VERY EARLY HOW TO DEAL WITH SNOW LOAD.

SO THAT HELPS US BECAUSE PANELS CAN WITHSTAND A BUNCH OF PRESSURE.

SO WIND PRESSURE AS WELL AS UPLIFT.

IN FLORIDA WE SPECIFICALLY HAVE THE HIGHEST WIND CODES IN THE NATION.

AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE THE HIGHEST FIRE SAFETY STANDARDS IN THE NATION.

SO PANELS THAT ARE ON THE MARKET HERE DO HAVE TO MEET FLORIDA BUILDING CODE.

SO THERE'S, YOU KNOW, TWO LAYERS OF SUPPORT IN THAT EVERY STATE HAS A BUILDING CODE, BUT OURS IS THE MOST STRINGENT IN THE NATION.

AND THEN FCC ADDS THAT LAYER.

IT'S ACTUALLY A STATUTORY REQUIREMENT THAT FCC REVIEWS EVERYTHING ON OUR MARKET.

AND THAT'S I'M ASSUMING EVERYBODY KNOWS BUT THE FLORIDA SOLAR ENERGY CENTER IN COCOA.

UM, SO PANELS ARE DUMB.

NO MOVING PARTS. THEY DON'T NEED TO BE CLEANED.

THEY RARELY EVER BREAK.

EXTREMELY STURDY.

AND THEN THE RACKING, RACKING USES LIKE TRIED AND TRUE WEATHERPROOFING METHODOLOGY.

A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE THAT WE ALREADY HAVE HOLES IN OUR ROOF FROM ATTIC VENTS CHIMNEYS.

THERE'S A SURPRISING AMOUNT OF CHIMNEYS IN FLORIDA SATELLITE DISHES, SO SOLAR USES FLASHING, WHICH ARE THOSE BLACK SQUARES THAT YOU SEE THERE? AND THEN ALSO BECAUSE OF A BAD RAP THAT SOLAR HAS HAD IN THE PAST, AS LIKE, OH, THIS WILL MAKE LEAKS.

YOU'RE DRILLING A BUNCH OF HOLES IN YOUR ROOF.

THEY ALL USE SEVERAL LAYERS.

SO O-RINGS AND DIFFERENT SILICONE SEALANTS HAVE COME INTO THE MIX AS WELL.

AND THEN SOMETHING REALLY EXCITING ABOUT SOLAR IN FLORIDA IS THAT WE HAVE A LOT OF METAL ROOFS, AND METAL ROOFS AND SOLAR GO TOGETHER LIKE PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY.

SO THERE'S NO PENETRATION REQUIRED FOR A METAL ROOF.

IT'S JUST LIKE A TENSION ROD SYSTEM.

AND THAT IS APPROVED FOR USE IN FLORIDA, EVEN IN MIAMI DADE COUNTY.

SO SOLAR JUST CONNECTS RIGHT TO YOUR ROOF.

OR YOU COULD DO A GROUND MOUNT IN YOUR BACKYARD.

AND THEN THIS IS REALLY THE BRAIN OF THE OPERATION IS YOUR INVERTER.

MOST PEOPLE ARE GOING WITH MICRO-INVERTERS NOW JUST BECAUSE THE PRICE HAS COME DOWN SO MUCH AND THEY CLEAN UP THE FLOW OF ELECTRICITY AND THEY'RE THE THE BEST TECHNOLOGY.

BUT MOST PEOPLE DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT INVERTERS BECAUSE WHAT THEY'VE HEARD ABOUT SOLAR NOT WORKING OR NOT WORKING WELL IS ALL MYTH.

THIS IS THE ONLY PART OF YOUR SYSTEM THAT REALLY BREAKS.

THIS IS LIKE A COMPUTER.

SO THEY LAST TYPICALLY TEN YEARS AND NEED TO BE REPLACED.

THEY CONVERT THE ELECTRICITY FROM DC CURRENT OR DIRECT RAW ELECTRICITY TO ALTERNATING CURRENT, WHICH IS WHAT OUR HOMES USE.

AND THEN ELECTRICAL PANELS.

SOLAR CONNECTS DIRECTLY INTO YOUR HOME IN A VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD FASHION.

FLORIDA'S BEEN A LITTLE BIT CRAZY IN HOW WE'VE BUILT HOMES, AND I THINK WE'VE BROKEN THE RULES A LOT.

AND IT'S REALLY GOOD TO INVESTIGATE GOING SOLAR, BECAUSE OFTEN TIMES YOU'LL HAVE AN ENGINEER COME TO YOUR HOME AND TELL YOU THAT YOUR PANEL IS A MESS AND YOU PROBABLY SHOULD FIX IT. SO I TELL PEOPLE, IT'S A FREE WAY TO LOOK INTO YOUR HOME AND SEE IF IT'S GOING TO BURN DOWN FROM SOME CRAZINESS FROM THE 90S.

YOU KNOW, THOSE BREAKERS THAT WERE POPULAR IN OUR DEVELOPMENTS IN THE 90S.

AND THEN IF YOUR HOME WAS BUILT BEFORE 1978, ALSO REALLY GOOD TO HAVE SOMEBODY COME LOOK AT YOUR PANEL.

THE NEC 2017, THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE UPDATE IN 2017 HIT FLORIDA REALLY HARD BECAUSE OF THINGS LIKE THIS.

AND IT JUST KIND OF AGING INFRASTRUCTURE WHEN IT COMES TO OUR DEVELOPMENTS.

EVERYONE HAD THREE YEARS TO FULLY IMPLEMENT IT, SO IT HAD VERY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS TO MAKE SOLAR EVEN MORE SAFE.

SO SOLAR INSTALLERS ARE REALLY GOOD AT BEING ABLE TO COME OUT AND SEE THE ELECTRICAL SIDE OF YOUR HOME AND SAY, THESE WIRES AREN'T RECOMMENDED ANYMORE.
